Permaculture grow-your-own course 2017

If you would like to express interest or request a place on the growing and Permaculture course, please send a message via the contact page.

The course is intended for anyone who would like to start growing fruit and veg and would like a nudge to get going, those who would like to learn about Permaculture and also those with some experience of growing their own or Permaculture who would like to learn from experience at KPR. Please explain your own background and any particular interest so I can tailor the content somewhat to suit. Also please say where you are located: the course will be run at the site but there is a choice of back-up indoor locations.

Topics I would intend to cover include:

  • Introduction to permaculture
  • Propagating apple rootstock, grafting
  • Apple varieties
  • DIY fleece and polytunnel design and construction
  • Planting seeds, planning, growing, hardening off, planting out
  • Permaculture: studying and amending the plot  (drainage, rainwater harvesting, windbreaks)
  • Apple thinning, pruning
  • Keeping the soil covered: compost or not, green manure, chop and drop, diy wood chip, ground cover
  • Perennial veg: asparagus, rhubarb, self-seeding spinach, potatoes, guilds, bamboo
  • Ponds, deck chair technique
  • Chickens, ducks etc. (briefly)
  • Fruit and nuts: plum, hazel, almond, walnut, chestnut, squirrels
  • Problem solving
  • Propagating: hardwood cuttings, division, strawberry runners
  • Seed saving
  • Harvesting and storage
